Soro: A youth was beaten to death allegedly for raping a married woman at Karanjabania village of Singhakhunta panchayat under Soro police limits in Balasore district Thursday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Basant Singh (35), a resident of the same village.

According to a source, Basant entered the house of the woman Thursday afternoon after he found her alone. Initially the woman tried to resist Basant, but the youth overpowered her and raped her. In the process, the woman sustained severe injuries.

However, hearing the victim’s cries of anguish, villagers came to her rescue and managed to catch Basant. The victim was rushed to the Soro government hospital. Later she was shifted to Balasore district headquarters hospital as her condition deteriorated.

Irate villagers then thrashed Basant mercilessly after tying him to a tree. The beating continued late into the night. By then Basant had died.

After getting information about the incident, Soro police station IIC M Mohnaty reached the spot with a team at about 9:30pm. They seized the body of Basant and sent it for post-mortem.

However, at the time of filing this report, no FIR has been registered as the police are yet to get an official complaint regarding the incident. Police however, are trying to identify those associated with the lynching of Basant.
