Boinda, July 9: A youth was shot dead by a co-villager over longstanding land dispute at Mamurijharan villager under Thakurgad police limits in Angul district Wednesday evening, police said Thursday.

The victim was identified as Pabitra Nayak (30). Accused Suresh Patra fled the scene. Police registered a case over a complaint lodged by Pabitra’s father Basant Nayak Thursday.

Police also seized the body and sent it for post-mortem to Athamallik health centre. A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused. The incident has flared up tension in the village.

Police said Pabitra and Suresh had a dispute relating to their farmland and had fought several times over the issue.
The incident occurred when Pabitra was building a dyke around his farmland to prevent spillage of water. Suresh reached the spot and picked up a fight with him protesting his work.

Enraged, Suresh rushed back home to bring a country-made gun and fired at Pabitra, killing him on the spot. Family members rushed Pabitra to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
